The Bank – Covered Bond Issuer, or Cover Bond Issuer industry consists of legal separate entities specifically set up for issuing debt securities, which are collateralised against a pool of assets that, in case of failure of the issuer, can cover claims at any point of time. They are different from ABS or Asset Backed Securities issuer, whose debt securities are collateralised by contract rather than by Covered Bond Law.
The Industry Sector is a classification that describes the activity of an entity within the economy. The classification is based on where the relevant entity derives the majority of its revenue.
In some cases, the same legal entity may be recorded multiple times in CMDportal database. This happens when the issuer is a Branch or when the issuer frequently issues Covered Bonds. The reason for this is that for reasons of collateralisation covered bonds carry different and typically higher quality ratings.
In the Collaborative Bond and Money Market Data Model the Covered Bond issuers Industry Sector appears within the Industry Sector Type: Bank. Accordingly, this entity has a specific banking license from the regulator in its home jurisdiction.
CMDportal uses industry sector classifications both at the Legal Entity level, as well as at the Group level. At the Legal Entity level the entity is classified by their actual industry activity. Accordingly, we classify an issuer of Asset Backed Securities that is part of a universal bank as an ABS type issuer at the entity level but at the group level as for example a "Bank - Universal.”
Based on available data, on the 18th of April 2018 the size of the Bank - Covered Bond issuer Bond Market at entity level was USD15bn equivalent. At the group level the size of the market was USD4bn equivalent.
