Bank - Online

From the Collaborative Bond and Money Market Data Portal

Online banking, or Direct banking, is a new concept of delivering banking services to consumers through direct channels, as opposed to a multi-channel concept normally seen in 'traditional' banking. Direct banking operates without the need of physical space and instead uses online banking, mobile banking, ATM networks and even mail to engage with customers.

The first Direct bank was established in the early 1990s as technology became widely adopted in different sectors, which facilitated the creation of a variety of direct banks. Some Direct banks offer online savings accounts, and compared to 'traditional' banking, they are able to offer higher interest rates as they do not face costs that traditional banks would (i.e. rent, utilities ...).
