International bond

From the Collaborative Bond and Money Market Data Portal

The textbook definition of an international bond is that of a debt instrument that is issued in a country by a non-domestic entity. They are debt securities issued in the international market as opposed to the domestic market. International bonds can be issued as Eurobonds, Foreign bonds, and Global bonds.

In the Collaborative Bond and Money Market Data Model, the classification Euro, Foreign, Global or Domestic appears within the field Market which is part of the universe of Bond and Money Market Instruments.

In capital market data analysis CMDportal typically distinguishes international bonds simply by the characteristic that the ISIN starts with XS, whilst domestic bonds are distinguished by excluding XS ISINs from a specific data universe, or when researching a specific domestic market by specifying DE, FR, GB etc. Users can filter for bonds by market by typing XS in the ISIN filter as provided by most tools on the portal.

Based on available data, on the 1st of October 2018, the size of the International bond market (XS ISINs) was close to USD15.6 trillion
