Monetary Financial Institutions (MFIs)

From the Collaborative Bond and Money Market Data Portal

Monetary Financial Institutions (MFIs) are defined as central banks, EU resident credit institutions as defined in EU Community Law, and other EU resident financial institutions whose business is to receive deposits or close substitutes for deposits from entities other than MFIs and, for their own account (at least in economic terms), to grant credits and/or make investments in securities. Money market funds are also classified as MFIs. The MFI is a unique code provided by the European Central Bank and used in EU Statistics. Legal Entities and their branches typically all have their own MFI.

In the Collaborative Bond and Money Market Data Model, the MFI appears at the Legal Entity Level both as a field with unique identifiers and as MFI Category. Both are provided by the European Central Bank. There are 4 MFI Categories; Central Bank, Credit Institution, Money Market Fund and Other Institution.

Based on available data, on the 1st of November 2018, the amount of vanilla bonds outstanding through MFIs was over EUR7.3 trillion in 61 different currencies.
