THE INTERNATIONAL ROLE OF THE EURO

Date: 19th June 2024
Time: 13:00 - 14:00
Location: Online
Format: Virtual roundtable

The international role of the euro

Despite a series of macroeconomic shocks, the global role of the euro has remained resilient, as demonstrated by the European Central Bank’s 2023 report on the international role of the euro.

Last year’s report showed that the euro remained the second most important central bank reserve currency in 2022 behind the dollar. But in a higher interest rate environment and amid escalating geopolitical tensions, how has the euro fared since then? Has the currency benefitted from de-dollarisation or wariness towards the Chinese renminbi?

Join OMFIF as we host authors of the 2024 report, Isabel Vansteenkiste (director general for international and European relations, ECB) and Maurizio Michael Habib (team lead economist, international and European relations, ECB) for a presentation and discussion of the key findings as well as to explore how the currency’s use among non-euro countries has developed in the last year.
