In a general sense, green bonds finance projects aimed at energy efficiency, pollution prevention, sustainable agriculture, fishery and forestry, the protection of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, clean transportation, sustainable water management, and the cultivation of environmentally friendly technologies. They are part of a universe of investment products that adhere to Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) principles.
A growing number of standards and legal frameworks are emerging for SRI. The Green and Social Bond Principles of the IMCA are an example but there are many more. SRI investment products cater towards investors that have these principles as stated objective or seek to comply with a law inspired by them.
As of June 2017, The ICMA has published the updated version of the Green Bond Principles (GBP). The GBP acknowledges the application of the “use of proceeds” bond concept to themes beyond the environment, such as bonds financing projects with social objectives. Social Bond Principles provide transparency and disclosure to this market segment. Social Bond Principles (SBP)
